Ai Dong – Locked Cave (GZ/Qx/12)

Guizhou, Qianxi County, Honglin Town

N 27° 07’ 21.7” E 105° 52’ 47.1”

Altitude: 1456 m a.s.l.

Cave length: 650 m, 680 m (extimated)

Vertical range: -55 m

Exploration: Guizhou 2000

Surveyors: D. Sighel, G. Rossi, G. Berzacola (Oct. 2000)

Cave description:

Ai Dong is the sinkhole of one of the northern allogenic rivers. Because the cave is located on the slop of a valley, part of the water runs out of the sinkhole being sunk downstream in the valley. The cave opening is very wide, it is blocked by a massive artificial wall and the cave still shows the remaining of several buildings on a flat alluvium- clastic terrace. Feature is partially eroded by the creek flowing down to a lower gallery. Ai Dong is a multi-level cave where young small tubes act as hydrological shortcuts connected to a large older gallery. Massive speleothems decorate and sometimes almost fill the cave, which ends in a choke.
