This expedition was a 4 week, 13 person summer caving expedition based between mid-July and mid-August. The brief aims of the expedition were to explore known caves and discover new entrances both on the 4,300 metre plateau between Zhongdian and the Jinsha Jiang (Yangtze River) and at resurgence level 2,300 metres below. This expedition was based on the work carried out by the Hong Meigui expeditions of 2002 [HMG02], 2003 [HMG03] and 2004 [HMG04]. Following extensive reconnaissance work in 2002, a specific mountain range had been identified, just west of the town of Zhongdian, which looked particularly promising in terms of undiscovered caves. This mountain range attracted excitement because of its depth potential: rainfall on mountains of up to 4,500m altitude appeared to drain underground and reappear at known resurgences in and near the Jinsha Jiang valley at 2,000 Â– 2,200m altitude, making for a depth potential of 2-2.5km. The primary aim of the 2006 expedition was to locate entrances to high-altitude caves of significant depth by spotting melted gaps in light snow cover caused by warm cave air. In the event, there was not enough snow to pursue this strategy. The expedition logged 26 new minor cave entrances. Information sur le fichier - tianxing 2004 Taille du fichier : 5.7 MB Version : Date de chargement sur le serveur : 19/01/2011 Chargements : 1 036 Catégorie : Expéditions Description : Hong Meigui Tian Xing 2004 was a 9-week, 15-member caving expedition to Tian Xing village of Wulong County, Chongqing Muncipality in southwest China. The expedition was affiliated to the Hong Meigui Cave Exploration Society. The expedition continued work of previous Hong Meigui CES and China Caves Project expeditions to the same area. A total of 9,665m of passage were surveyed, including significant extensions to Dà KÄ“ng (depth 775m) and Liù ChÇ AÅkÇ’u Xià Dà²ng (depth 592m), which are now ranked as the second and fourth deepest caves in China. Numerous new entrances were located and explored, including Bamboo Cave (depth 356m) and Là¡nmù Shù Dà²ng (depth 230m), both with potential for further exploration. A video documentary was made of the expedition. Biological specimens were collected as part of a ongoing collaboration with the Yunnan Institute of Zoology. Following up the work of the Yunnan 2003 expedition, the expeditions returned to the Zhongdian region to continue exploration in a promising mountain range that has a 2,300m depth potential. Yunnan Resurgences 2004 was a a 25-day, 4-person winter expedition (January-February), to explore resurgences in the Yangtze valley during the dry season. The expedition explored one known resurgence cave (C3-1, Shui Lian Dong) for 1.3km to sumps. Following geological predictions, they also found a second large resurgence (C3-96/97, Lucky Benevolent Water) up a nearby tributary. Yunnan 2004 was a 7-week, 17-person summer caving expedition (July- August) to explore known entrances and to search for new entrances on the mountain tops 2,300m higher, between the Yangtze valley and the town of Zhongdian. The expedition covered a large area and logged 240 new entrances. The deepest, C3-294 (Dawa Dong), was explored to a depth of 130m. Explo- ration at the limit was slowed significantly by a tight rift requiring hammering, but no termination was reached.
