Description 1

Near Haiyi Village

Anchazi Dong comprises approximately 600m of horizonal passage at -100m from the surface. Two entrance shafts drop into the passage, one near the northeast end of the horizontal cave, the second near the southwest end.

The first and larger doline, is a 60m wide depression located a short way from the quarry passed on the way to camp from Hai Yi town. The walls are all near-vertical or overhung, so access is best from the southeast where a large tree on the cliff, a few meters below the lip, gives a 45m freehang. A forest of shoulder-height plants (easily brushed aside) covers the doline, and a smattering of trees provides convenient rebelays. The floor slopes down steeply from the northwest and southeast. High at either end there are short fossil caves, while the active caves run along the northeast-southwest axis.

To the northeast, what begins as a muddy stoopway descends to slightly larger passage before lowering to a minimal airspace duck. The duck continues for some way without terminating and had a slight breeze, so it may be safely passable when water levels are low, but it was not pushed to a conclusion in 2001.

The main Anchazi Dong cave lies to the southwest. It begins as 12m wide rocky passage, slowly lowering and narrowing until the ceiling abruptly rises and water is encountered on the right. This pool, like all of the others in Anchazi, was static at the time of exploration, and contained calcite rafts. By skirting around boulders and past muddy gours to a nice cracked mud floor, the water can briefly be avoided. On the last stretch of bank, to the left there is a 45 degree mud climb that has not been pushed. At a pair of VW-bug sized boulders the water fills the width of the passage and the way on requires a boat or other floatation aid.

After 30m of paddling it's possible to disembark on a 6m wide mudbank. At the end of the bank is a 6m climb (needs bolts) to a possible continuation of the high-level passage that can be seen looking back towards the north. Back in the water, the Shrieking Eels begins with a duck sporting a 60cm high, 30cm wide airspace -- a tight fit for a tyre inner tube. A narrow channel continues to a calcite constriction, slightly larger than the previous duck. Beyond the passage enlarges briefly. A lead to the left heads back towards the climb before the duck, while ahead the Root Canals are a section of wide flooded passage, with only 70cm of airspace. After 20m the mudbanks return and the boat ride comes to an end at Chocolate Sunshine, the second entrance to Anchazi.

A daylight shaft is visible from the bottom of a steep slope which begins as easy scrambling up rocks and earth banks, but degenerates to non-trivial moves over slime coated limestone 20m up. If descending via Chocolate Sunshine, the top part of the pitch can be easily rigged using tree belays from the northeast side fo the shaft. The bottom part of the shaft has not been well rigged, but can be done as a long off-vertical hang, from the lowest tree with several rub points. A possible alternative is to rig from the southwest side for a longer prussik without the rubs.

Along the southern wall of Chocolate Sunshine, there are a series of two meter high orange gour pools that flow with drips after a heavy rain. Downstream from the gours, the roof lowers to 10m high, and it is necessary to briefly wade through a metre deep pool. After 30m, the passage makes a 90 degree bend to the left. In the righthand corner, past a well-decorated mud bank, there is a small sump pool. Progress is easy walking along the lefthand mudbank. After a further 40m the mud bank ends. Descend to water level and enter El Naranjo, a 6m wide passage floored by orange rimmed gours (care!). This passage quickly leads to a 25m wide chamber with a large boulder island in the middle. Gour pools encircle the island, draining into a wide, deep sump pool.
