`97 Sino-Japan joint cave expedition and scientific survey

Cave is a part of natural landscape in the world, and also a kind of natural resources. So it has closely relationship with human activity. China is a large karst country and a large cave country in the world. In the past, caves were important shelters for ancients,now, they have become a hot-spot of travel.Quantities of breathtaking and charming caves in China attract cavers,scientists and photographers all over the world, such as America,English,Canada,Japan,Italia and so on. The history of Chinese-Foreign joint cave expedition is more than 15 years.

The follows are basic information of `97 Sino-Japan joint cave expedition :

1.Members: 6 chinese people come from Karst Istitute of Geology, Ministry of Land and Resources, 10 Japanese people come from Ritsumeikan University.

2.Time: This activity has undertaken from Feb. 18, 97 to March 24, 97, total 35 days.

3.Location: Sanhe,Houshigang,Changgang,Hema and Tanchang Towns, Renhuai City, Guizhou Province, China.

4.Main objects:

a. To find the regularity of cave development in working-area, and explore the riciprocal relation between shaft,doline and underground river;

b. To understand the burial depth and constructure feature of underground water. Moreover, provide the reasonable basis of opening the karst underground water and surface water.

c. To investigate and evalue the cave travel resources and promote cave travel and local economy development;

d. To promote the friendship and cooperation between chinese and Japanese.

5.Achievment:

a. 8 shaft were explored with single rope technique, the first one with 250 meters deep was Dawang shaft at Shang village, Hema Town, Renhuai City. The second one with 165 meters deep was Xiongmaokou shaft in Houshigang Town; the third one with 153 meters deep was Xiejiayan shaft in Changgang Town. The depth of other shaft are about 100 meters. So the total depth of all shaft was 1100 meters.

b. 16 inclined and horizontal caves were surveyed in this caving. The total length come to 5730 metes.4 caves`s length is over 800 meters. They were Xiaoshui cave in Shanhe Town,Tianqi and Yanhui caves in Changgang Town and Chuqi Cave in Tanchang Town. The length of other is about 200~400 meters.

In addition, we have recognized the karst water system and cave system in working area with obviously multi-layer constructure(texture) feature. In one hand, the upper-layer karst water was mainly crevice water with dispersingly draining, the lower-layer was pipeline water with centrally draining. The karst crevice water unit existed along with karst pipeline water unit. In another hand, the upper-layer cave-unit are mainly shafts, dolines and corrosional crevices and the lower-layer unit are inclined caves by stages or horizontal caves. In vertical direction, there were multi-layer texture with 3~6 terraces or tablelands. Each tableland was 40 meters high.

This Sino-Japanese cave expedition comes to a successful conclusion and promote the friendship each other.

Exploration Society of Ritsumeikan University , Tokyo, Japan, is determined to coorperate with Institute of Karst Geology, Ministry of Land and Resources, China for long. Meanwhile, the book " `97 Renhuai cave and caving" will come out.
